This is wicked show!

There is an enormous work by Paratene Matchitt - the guy who did the funky bridge from Wellington Civic square to the waterfront. I love deciphering the levels of symbolism and meaning in Maori art. Even with the commissioned work you can feel the soul of his work - not like some of the plastic commercial quick-buck art around. I think art should engage more than the intellect - it should engage on an emotional level too.
My second favourite in this show is Jim Allen's New Zealand Environment No 5, 1969 and it absolutely does that. Imagine a very dark room inside a very bright gallery. Now imagine a little-box like room inside the dark room lit with green neon. And you can go inside it! At first I was too scared to in case an alarm went off or something but NO it was 100% OK to walk inside this artwork. Barbed wire, bark, fleece and fake cobwebs - now that is an art experience!
